Whiplash injury usually occurs following a rear-end collision in which the occupant’s neck is jerked backwards and then thrown forwards by the impact.
In the first phase of the injury the vehicle is struck from behind and the occupant’s body is thrown forward but the head lags behind, resulting in hyperextension of the neck. During the hyperextension the anterior and longitudinal ligaments and the capsular fibres of the facet joints in the cervical spine are strained.
Whiplash is the term that is commonly used to describe the injury to the soft tissues in the neck that is often the result of road traffic accidents. It is caused by a sudden movement or jolt which forces the neck beyond it s normal range of movement.
