Man injured in a road crash has been awarded 3 5m in compensation
A man whose hopes of a motor racing career came to an end when he was severely injured in a road crash has been awarded £3.5m in compensation.
Steven Schembri, 25, suffered skull fractures when his car was struck head-on by a vehicle on the Rignall Road, Buckinghamshire, in October 2000.
Mr Schembri, of Ridgeway Road, Chesham, still has impaired communication skills and a poor memory because of the crash.
Mr Justice Foskett approved the £3.5m payout at the High Court.
Mr Schembri’s passenger Craig Herbert, also from Chesham, sustained abrasions and whiplash injuries in the crash.
The car they were travelling in was hit by a Mercedes 2000, driven by Steven Davies, of Mill Lane in Monks Risborough, Buckinghamshire, whose insurers admitted liability.
‘Cups and trophies’
Mr Davies had recently passed his driving test, the court heard.
Mr Schembri’s parents have called for a change in the law to ensure that motorists who have recently passed their driving tests cannot drive high-performance cars.
The family’s solicitor, Tracy Edwards, said they now wished to be “left to get on with their lives after such a long drawn-out case”.
Ms Edwards said the accident had shattered Mr Schembri’s ambitions of becoming a top Hot Rod racer, as he is now incapable of holding a driving licence because of his injuries.
He had already won several cups and trophies as an amateur before the crash.
Mr Schembri has recently moved into his own bungalow near his parents’ home in Chesham.
